Lawrence Weiner is one of the most significant and iconic conceptual artists of our time. Throughout his practice he has pursued inquiries into language and a radical redefinition of the artist/viewer relationship. Translating his investigations into typographical linguistic structures and visual systems across varied formats and manifestations, he has produced books, films, videos, performances and audio works.
In conjunction with his talk for the 2013 Insights Design Lecture Series, the Walker commissioned (my fave) LA-based designer/artist Geoff McFetridge to create artwork to cover construction fencing during the Walker’s rebricking project. Adore.
The Girls In The Band was directed and produced by Judy Chaikin. The film tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30′s to the present day. These talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today a new breed of gifted young women is taking their rightful place in the world of jazz which can no longer deny their talents.
